RANDOM THOUGHTS: The story of the USS Tennessee (Crossville Chronicle)

When people think of Tennessee, it is mountains that come to mind, not oceans. That makes Tennessee's role in naval history especially interesting. Last July this column told the long, proud history of the USS Nashville. Last month another chapter came to life in a National Geographic television special.

They followed the ship Odyssey in its search for the sunken SS Republic, a civilian steamer. In October 1865, it left New York headed for New Orleans with a full load of passengers and $400,000 in gold and silver coins to help in the South's reconstruction. . . .
