Hawaii state quarter design features Kamehameha (Honolulu Advertiser, HI)

It's official.

A 25-cent piece featuring the mighty profile of King Kamehameha, the eight main islands, our state motto (Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina e ka pono), admission year and — in case anyone doesn't get it — the word "Hawaii" will be jingling in pockets and purses across the U.S.

Gov. Linda Lingle yesterday announced formal approval of the Hawai'i commemorative quarter, the last of 50 such quarters to be authorized and issued by the U.S. Mint. . . .

Question for you. Do you think that the presidential gold spouse coins will increase in value? in the short run or later?

My personal view is that if you want to invest in the Presidential Spousal coins because you think the value of gold is going up, then buy bullion coins with as low a markup over their bullion value as you can find or invest in a gold ETF like GLD.

If you want to invest in the Presidential Spousal coins because you think they as a collectible will increase in value, then I personally think you will be disappointed. The only people I think have a potential to cash in on the spousal coins as an investment will be those collecting them well beyond our lifetimes. This is just my personal opinion and I'm sure there are those that disagree.

Yes, I was going to use them as a collectable not as gold. I collected the 20th anniversary silver american eagles. They are up 300X so one can make money with them. I thought maybe they would do the same. The 1999 silver proof set is worth $400. If you bought it in 1999 you would have a lot of money. Do you think one can expect the same value to rise with presidential spouse gold coins?

There is a theory behind why 1999 Silver proof sets have run up in value so much. The theory is that by the time the state quarters program had brought on millions of new collectors, many had missed out on the 1999 silver proof sets. So by the time these collectors came on board, demand far outstripped supply.

I personally don't believe demand is going to outstrip supply like this with Presidential Spousal coins. However, if the Presidential dollars bring on millions of new collectors starting next year or beyond, then you could have something similar happen to 2007 silver proof sets.
